Why Winona Ryder Is Back For Good - Vogue.co.uk

Having made her name as a kooky cult heroine in the Nineties with films such as Heathers, Beetlejuice and Girl, Interrupted, she then was forced into a long career hiatus following her infamous 2002 shoplifting conviction, before slowly... Ryder's new venture is as the mother of a missing child in sci-fi horror series Stranger Things, which debuted on Netflix this past weekend. Its creators, brothers Matt and Ross Duffer, grew up in the height of Winona mania and admit that her casting was heavily influenced by their love of her films when they were growing up in North Carolina in the Nineties. And judging by online reactions so far, they are not alone in their nostalgia. "She has all that glamour that's lost today, that's been pummelled by Instagram and TMZ," he said. "She inspires a kind of cultist love that I don't see other ingénues inspiring. Ryder herself says that it was peaking in her twenties, taking a hiatus for much of her thirties and having to return to her career approaching her forties that made creating a seamless return so difficult. According to the 44-year-old it was her 2010 turn as a washed-up, troubled ballerina in Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan that paved the way for this new chapter of her career. "I went from weirdo teenager to pixie waif to them not knowing what the hell to do with me," she explained. "I felt [with Black Swan ] like for the first time in a long time people really responded to me. That was a very liberating thing, because I was playing my age. In my mind, and I think in a lot of people's minds, that really helped. Many will embrace the return of much-loved screen heroine who acts as the personification of Nineties cult cool - the wide-eyed starlet who inspired misguided pixie crops the world over. Others will always associate her primarily with the shoplifting incident (who hasn't watched that grainy CCTV footage on Youtube. ), but, these days, Ryder has accepted it as a part of her past and moved on. "I think for me, personally, it was good for my soul and stuff to be M. I. A. In the big picture, I see it as something that opened the door for me to get away. " But, she added, "In the grand scheme of things it wasn't exactly the crime of the century.

The Story Behind A Couture Wedding Dress - Vogue.co.uk

FINDING the right inspiration for a bespoke wedding dress may not always be a straightforward process but, for Peter Dundas - the man behind the Roberto Cavalli Couture gown that Ciara wore to marry Russell Wilson at Cheshire's Peckforton Castle... "Ciara wanted to feel like a princess, which is also her middle name," Dundas said of the inspiration behind his design. "She liked the idea of several layers and was open to many of my suggestions, such as the wheat motif in the embroideries, which symbolises prosperity and happiness. Dundas - who is a close friend of the singer and model (making it "extra exciting", he revealed) - also shed light on the impressively short time frame that it took to create the couture gown. "I sent the first sketches to Ciara about four months before her wedding," the designer said. "We had four fittings with her: two in New York, one in Milan and one in the UK, besides several fittings without her. As well as creating bridal dresses for friends and family, he famously designed the floral gown that Poppy Delevingne wore for her celebration in Morocco in 2014 and, last week, Ana Beatriz Barros wore a bespoke Roberto Cavalli sequinned dress for... I was also very happy with the dress I did for Poppy even if it was my own design. "The pressure is mainly that you want someone to look and feel the best they ever have," the designer disclosed. On the whole, though, Dundas's experiences have been positive, if not a little nerve wracking at times. "The most nerve wracking was making my sister's wedding dress," he revealed. "My first dress was for my cousin when I was at school. I delivered the dress 14 minutes before the ceremony. As for the ultimate tips he would give brides-to-be when it comes to choosing a wedding dress, the designer thinks it shouldn't be a high-pressure decision. Step inside the making of Ciara's Roberto Cavalli Couture gown, below.
