Bojack Horseman Creator Explains Fuller House-Inspired Storyline - Vanity Fair
Back in the 90s, BoJack Horseman—a man with the head of a horse, or a horse with the body of a man. It was called Horsin’ Around, and it centered on a gaggle of human orphans being raised by a clueless but loving equine father figure with a Bill Cosby sweater and a luscious mane worthy of a young John Stamos. Nowadays, as depicted on Netflix’s celebrated, pun-loving sadcom of the same name, BoJack (voiced by Will Arnett ) is a depressed has-been doing his best to stay relevant in the fickle world of Hollywood—or Hollywoo, as it’s called on the show. (Again: just go with it. ) Which is why audiences may not be surprised when partway through the series’s third season—live on Netflix as of midnight Friday—BoJack hears about a new opportunity. ) It's a sequel to Horsin’ Around being shopped by another one of the sitcom’s washed-up stars, Bradley Hitler-Smith ( Adam Conover ). In Ethan Around, as Bradley explains to BoJack, “ Ethan is the dad, and he’s raising three little horses. A gender-swapped—er, species-swapped—version of the sitcom’s original premise, focused on one of its former child stars. That hypothetical series sounds an awful lot like Fuller House, an actual 90s sitcom revival that stars the all-grown-up cast of Full House —and shares a streaming home with BoJack. Ask BoJack creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg about the similarities, though, and he’ll try at first to deflect the question—albeit in a good-natured tone that indicates he knows he’s not telling the hoof, the whole hoof, and nothing but the hoof. “I can’t—I don’t—you know, look, a show exists, and then it is popular and beloved, and it comes back in a new iteration,” he explained during a recent phone conversation with Vanity Fair, when asked about Ethan Around ’s Fuller House connection. Push a little further, though, and Bob-Waksberg will get back on the horse. Netflix, he says, was “cool with” his show poking fun at its network-mate, perhaps because the network understood that BoJack ’s goal wasn’t necessarily “just talking shit about Fuller House. ” (It probably helps that Fuller House was also a smashing success that drew as many as 14. 4 million viewers in its first 35 days of release, critics and reviews be damned. ) Instead, Bob-Waksberg says, because nostalgic sitcom revivals like these have become increasingly common, “it would be weird to ignore it in the BoJack Horseman universe. ” He likened the situation to Larry David’s uncanny resemblance to Bernie Sanders —once people started noticing it, it would have felt strange for Saturday Night Live not to bring David on to spoof the presidential candidate. There’s real pathos in Bradley’s desire to relive his glory days: “For the last 20 years, I’ve been telling people I didn’t need the trappings of fame. That I was better off, happy with my little B-plus life and my little B-plus hardware store, and little B-plus Olympia, Washington,” he tells BoJack. I miss the warmth of the spotlight on my face, the thrill of telling a joke and feeling it land. Perhaps Fuller House stars Candace Cameron-Bure, Andrea Barber, and Jodie Sweetin would actually feel a sort of kinship with him—if they or their co-workers ever checked out BoJack.www.vanityfair.com
21st UNAIDS conference comes to an end amid praises - South African Broadcasting Corporation
The 21st International AIDS Conference is wrapping up in Durban as thousands of delegates prepare to make their way home. The spotlight has, for a week, focused on key HIV and AIDS-related issues like access to treatment, depleted funding, the latest on vaccine development and bringing vulnerable groups like young girls and women closer to knowing their status and... Civil society voices have also strongly contributed to the messages coming out of AIDS 2016. The voices have not been drowned out by the numerous plenary sessions, scientific presentations and high-level delegations. NGO’s from across the globe have demanded equal rights for marginalised groups living with HIV. Frida Kabaso-Phiri, Director for Mothers to Mothers, says they employ HIV-positive women. Women who are HIV positive … they use their own story to share with other women, so they are able to tell how they went through the PMTCT process. Kababo-Phiri’s NGO, which is based in Lesotho, works with families to prevent mother to child transmission and adolescents a risk of contracting HIV. The organisation uses the mentor model to build trust and to spread awareness about mother to child transmission of HIV. Abhina Aher, who works for the India HIV/Aids Alliance, says it’s taken 21 AIDS conferences for transgender issues to come to the fore. We really want to give this message loud and clear to donors and stakeholders that trans issues are underfunded. "We are still trying to liberate ourselves from the label of gay men or men having sex with men. You know, the kind of living condition we live in, it is not a joke. Carlo Boras travelled to Durban from Serbia to share the message of the Youth of Jazas. The NGO offers support for young people living with HIV and AIDS. In fact, Eastern Europe and central Asia have been identified as the areas where the epidemic is currently growing the fastest, with the majority of infections coming from HIV drug users and men who have sex with men. Boras says, “So, it’s our tenth booth at the global village and we are very happy to have the opportunity to present what we do and to learn. And also with the conference, we also presented two scientific researches we had done. Adrian Gonzalez, from Mexico City, works with the United Nations Population Fund that's responsible for the Condom Project, an initiative focusing on the youth to destigmatise the use of condoms. Several experts and even celebrities like Elton John and Charlize Theron delivered strong messages about young people being left behind. Lars Christensen, from the HIV Youth Network in Denmark, says forming social support groups for HIV positive young people has worked tremendously well in his country. The stage has now been set for the next conference in Amsterdam in the Netherlands in 2018, when the world will once again come together to evaluate where it stands in the fight against HIV and AIDS.www.sabc.co.za
Alps knife attacker stabbed family after father of victims 'scratched thigh' in front of his wife - Telegraph.co.uk
Moroccan-born man who stabbed a French mother and her three young daughters at an Alpine holiday village said he had been offended after the father "scratched his inner thigh" in the presence of his wife, according to the prosecutor. The 37-year old was arrested at the Alpine resort of Garde-Colombe, near Laragne, in southern France. Her mother, 46, and sisters aged 12 and 14, were being treated at the hospital in Gap, closer to the scene of the attack. hortly after the attack, one witness said he had shouted that the woman and girls were "too scantily dressed" but Raphael Balland, the Gap prosecutor, said there was no evidence of this. However, he added that the man told him he had carried out the violent assault after he had been offended about an "inappropriate gesture". "The husband, and father, of the victims, confirms he crossed the suspect while he was leaving the premises after the attack. The suspect allegedly then told him: 'You shouldn't have done that in front of my wife', then scratching the inside of his thigh over his shorts," said the prosecutor. "The husband doesn't remember doing such a gesture," he said, adding that it was "hard to comprehend that such a gesture could have sparked such a serious attack from a person in full mental health or devoid of any ideological intent". Coming so soon after last Thursday's Bastille Day massacre in Nice by a Tunisian thought to be psychotic and only very recently radicalised, the Alps attack heightened fears of another Islamist-inspired crime. While he "didn't say a word" during the attack, according to the victims, during questioning he shouted "Allahu Akbar" three times and then refused to talk. He later told the prosecutor he had suffered from "depression and schizophrenia for several years". On Thursday, he was placed under judicial investigation for "attempted murder" against the mother and "aggravated attempted murder" against the three daughters and remanded in custody. He is reported to have been on holiday at the resort with his pregnant wife and two children. The two families were staying next to each other and the assailant’s wife is “devastated”, according to the mayor. The victims of the attack are from Nantes, in western France, and often holidayed at the resort. The attacker is from the Paris area.www.telegraph.co.uk
