When Johnny Coca was studying interior design at the Ecole Boulle, in Paris, he earned extra money by working as a freelance window dresser for Louis Vuitton. While drawing the concepts for the windows, he found himself dreaming up bags for the displays. “So I called Yves Carcelle, who was CEO of Louis Vuitton at the time, and said, ‘Perhaps you don’t know me, but I’m working for you, and I have lots of sketches of bags I’ve designed. ’ He said, ‘I’ll call you back in 30 minutes. Precisely a half-hour later, Carcelle phoned to say that he had arranged a meeting for the cheeky young man with the heads of the Vuitton design studio. Coca went to see them and was offered a job on the spot. The only glitch was that he still had six months left of his course. “When I told my mother, she said, ‘Johnny, the most important thing for you is to finish school,’ ” Coca recounts. ’ ” He did as he was told, while still managing to work at Vuitton. After graduating, in 1996, he took a full-time job there. Coca, 40, has been designing bags ever since, not only for Vuitton but for other brands too, most recently working with Phoebe Philo at Céline. (It’s thanks to his collaboration with Philo that Fashion Week front rows and art fair booths are peppered with Céline’s multicolored Trapezes and triple-zippered Trios. ) But since being appointed creative director of Mulberry, Britain’s biggest leather-goods house, Coca faces the very different challenge of designing, in addition to bags, shoes, jewelry, and a full ready-to-wear collection. After flourishing in the early aughts with a succession of bags infused with a quirky English sensibility, Mulberry has floundered of late. Coca, who arrived a year ago, has been charged with redefining the brand in the hope of emulating the success of fellow accessories-designers-turned-creative-directors Pierpaolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri, at Valentino, and Alessandro... The question is: Can he pull it off. “Of course he can,” says Lisa Armstrong, the influential fashion director of the Telegraph Media Group in London. “Johnny brings savoir faire to Mulberry. He’s very impressive when he talks about his craft. He knows a lot about leather, and how to make it look more refined. There’s also huge affection for Mulberry, especially in the U. K., where it’s a bit like Coach in the U. S. —it’s the label every girl aspires to for her first major bag. A pint-size Spaniard with a warm smile, silky black beard, and swashbuckling silver hoop earrings, Coca is a cosmopolitan creature of the modern fashion industry. He has spent his entire career outside his native Spain and speaks four languages fluently—Spanish, of course, plus French, English, and Italian. For a working day in Paris, he is dressed in his customary luxe-punk style, with a black.www.wmagazine.com
Mulberry's Barbara the barber retiring after 30 years - Times Record
Once told she would never make it in the industry, Barbara Medlock is gearing up for her retirement after nearly 30 years of dedication to serving hundreds of clients at her barber shop, Main Street Shop, 430 N. Main St., in Mulberry. Medlock, 61, of Crawford County opened the shop in Mulberry because, "Then, I needed to be close to my kids," she said. Medlock's career began in 1989, at about the age of 33, when she went to Westark Barber College in Fort Smith. At the barber school, students had to cut hair their first day. her first day, she was assigned her first haircut on a client who came into the school. She cut a child's hair on a boy who refused to sit still. Medlock said she had a difficult time with the cut because not only was it her first, but the boy was squirming around in the chair. She said her instructor told the owner of the school that she would never make it in the industry. Decades later, Medlock said she hit the jackpot in Mulberry and is sitting on a gold mine, and she's also been featured in a national book about barbering, " B-S Stories by Ruth V. Murray. "I have had the most haircuts in this salon (Main Street Shop). In one day, I've done 35 haircuts," Medlock said. After graduating, she was first employed in Ozark with Fay Gilbreath. "I was in Ozark for three months when I had a chance to work in Van Buren at The Barber Shop, 2729 Rudy Road, with Steve Moore, owner of Westark Barber College. I worked at the shop for three years. then I went to work at Marsha Powell-Fagan's shop on Main Street in Mulberry. I worked three for 11 years with Sherry House, who I went to barber college with. After Marsha's retirement, Sherry went back to school to become a registered nurse," Medlock said. She added, "I remember my time line because I was working during the 9/11 strikes. Then the month after that happened, I moved in here to my shop. It was 10/01/01. ". She never went to cosmetology school, but initially learned the ropes by sharing and trading techniques with Powell-Fagan. "Marsha had the building down the street. Her first husband, Steve Clauson, built her shop 16 years ago. Together, she and Clauson had two sons, Aaron, 41, and Caleb, 35, and five grandchildren. Since barbering has consumed the majority of Medlock's life, her sons grew up in her shop. Medlock has been married for six years to her high school sweetheart, Steve Medlock. She and her husband are both Van Buren High School class of 1972 graduates. Barbara rekindled her relationship with her current husband through her customers. "His mom and dad were customers here and I would talk to his dad about him because it was something we had in common. October 2016 would have been 16 years at the ship. When asked why she doesn't stay until October, she said she wants to spend time with her husband who retired two years ago. I've loved my job, but I want to spend time with my husband. Barbara said her customers are what keeps her going every day. She said she has hundreds of loyal customers of all ages. "I've done this so long that I have customers who I used to cut their hair when they were little kids and now they're bringing their kids in," Medlock said.swtimes.com
