Capturing the sensuous and the surreal - Sarasota Herald-Tribune
It is the often the eyes that draw you into photographs of Salvador Dalí. But among the 400 photographs by the German fashion photographer Horst P. Horst curated by the Victoria and Albert Museum for an international travelling exhibition, is a rare portrait of Dalí with both eyes closed, looking serene and introspective. It is the one photo from the show -- which opened in London in 2014 and has since travelled to Germany, the Netherlands and Montreal -- that caught the attention of the staff at the Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg. “Originally, we thought Dalí was just one of the celebrities pictured in the show,” says Peter Tush, the Dalí’s curator of education. “But we came to find there was a more in depth relationship between Horst and Dalí that we weren’t aware of. The more we researched, the more the Dalí aspect grew. The result is “Horst: Photographs – Fashion and Surrealism, which opened at the Dalí Museum this weekend. A scaled-down version of the original show, it includes 180 photographs that emphasize the Surrealistic influence in Horst’s work, ranging from some of the photographer’s 94 covers for Vogue magazine to intimate images taken of Dalí and his wife,... “Horst was an avid fan of museums and was inspired by both Renaissance and Classical art,” says Susanna Brown, curator of photography at the V &A, who spent seven years putting together the original exhibition. Horst, who ranks alongside Irving Penn and Richard Avedon as one of the 20th century’s most iconic photographers, excelled at portraiture, nude studies, interiors and still lifes and was acclaimed for his dramatic mastery of light and shadow,... But the preponderance of his oeuvre was devoted to fashion photography and his continuum of work reflects the changes in the industry from the opulence of Parisian pre-war haute couture to the rise of the more democratic and less elite... Born Horst Paul Albert Bohrmann, the photographer, who had no formal photographic training, moved from his native Germany to Paris in the early ‘30s, originally to work with the architect Corbusier. When Huene moved to Harper’s Bazaar, Horst took over as chief photographer for the magazine, cultivating a wide circle of friendships with the likes of fashion mavens Coco Chanel and Elsa Schiaparelli and artists, from Dalí to the choreographer... Petersburg exhibition opens with original black and white vintage haute couture photos from early in Horst’s career and concludes with large scale color prints made specifically for the exhibit that reflect his more mature work. In between are a diversity of images, including two of Horst’s most famous – a model in a seductively loose corset, shot from the back, which Brown calls his “Mona Lisa” and “Around the Clock,” a pair of legs shot from the waist down for a hosiery... There are also several glass showcases with sketches, letters and personal items, including Horst’s cameras and his Army dog tags (printed with the name of his Vogue editor as an emergency contact). and a short black and white film that details the photographer’s painstaking process in the studio. “He was the master, the magician of light,” says Brown.ticket.heraldtribune.com
