Audrey Gelman and Ilan Zechory Embrace the Grit and Glamour of Motor City for Their Wedding -

With a fleet of original Model T’s as unlikely ushers, Audrey Gelman, political public relations firecracker who will open the women’s club The Wing this fall, married Ilan Zechory, cofounder of the lyrics annotation startup Genius, in downtown... The couple experienced a judicious and steady version of what might otherwise be deemed a whirlwind romance. After just a few months of dating, both Audrey and Ilan, who met through work, separately confided in friends that they knew they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together, so during a neighborhood walk in the Detroit suburb where Ilan grew... Ten months later the couple were exchanging vows in downtown Detroit’s Milwaukee Junction, not far from Ilan’s hometown of Southfield, where the engagement took place. “I wanted my friends and family—some of whom barely leave the Upper West Side—to experience it for themselves. The late April wedding was fiercely personal and true to the couple, from the Scully and Mulder cake topper (Audrey is a devoted X-Files fan) to the unexpected recessional, Trick Daddy’s “I’m a Thug. ” The entire affair was a valiant exercise in restoring millennials’ good name, with the Saturday wedding bookended by a rehearsal dinner at the socialist bookstore and performance space Trinosophes, catered by Chartreuse, a local farm-to-table... and on Sunday, in lieu of a traditional brunch, the couple invited guests to a day of service planting fruits and vegetables in a city garden through the organization Keep Growing Detroit. “Part of why we wanted to get married in Detroit was because of the resilience of the city,” says Audrey of Sunday’s community service. “There’s a lot of encouraging talk about the rebirth of the city, but there are still sobering realities. Detroit-based Leigha Rankin and Jen Smith, of Madranas Custom Culture, executed Audrey’s vision for the wedding weekend with a focus on lush flora and foliage. “Audrey has such a mid-century feel about her but she has a vintage root, so we wanted to speak to that. ” The wedding location, being a historic museum, had myriad restrictions for decor including that nothing could be hung from the wall or ceilings, which lead to the idea of a three-point chuppah that looked as if it was growing out of the... The flowers were the bride’s main focus, so Madranas enlisted Brooklyn-based florist Sachi Rose to help create the floral tableau. Lush greens such as maidenhair fern and silver dollar eucalyptus provided the backdrop and were accented with dashes of bordeaux dahlias, coral peonies, blush sweet pea, and cappuccino spray roses. The flowers didn’t stop at the decor: The bride’s chestnut waves were festooned with sprigs of baby’s breath, echoing the Chantilly lace of her deep-V Monique Lhuillier dress. ) Embellished satin sandals, also by Lhuillier, and a Jennifer Behr crown—“a look.
