Idris Elba Has Zero Time for Your Red Carpet Dress Code - GQ Magazine
At the San Diego premiere of his new movie, Star Trek Beyond, Elba boldly went where none of his castmates has gone before. He ditched the tailored clothing they all seem to excel at wearing and wore a pair of gray shorts, blue suede Christian Louboutin sneakers, and an extremely on-trend band-collar shirt. Unless you're the Idris Elba of your corporate or social structure, we'd advise against showing up to the office or your next cocktail party with bare legs. (Actually, even if you are the Idris Elba of your corporate or social structure, you should probably just stick to real pants.www.gq.com
Collapse of corporate dress code makes life more difficult for men - Stuff.co.nz
"Fashion retailers in particular have a lot to gain from this trend," according to the annual AMP Capital Shopping Centres Recommended Retail Practice Report. "As the younger generation enters the work force, and many large corporations begin to relax their formal dress codes, the days of wearing the same navy suit to work every day are gone. "This means that many men are suddenly faced with the need to develop a personal style beyond the two days of the weekend. "It's not just young men either, even older generations are no longer wearing ties to the office every day. This creates a strong opportunity for fashion brands to provide curated services for men's styling, such as working with personal style experts and creating environments where men feel comfortable shopping for fashion items. The AMP study talked with 750 shopping enthusiasts in Australia and New Zealand over three weeks in May. On top of that, there was an online survey of 1000 in Australia and 500 and New Zealand. Men are keen shoppers, according to the results which are aimed at informing retailers. Three quarters (75 per cent) like shopping, and 22 per cent say they love it, while 56 per cent admit to visiting a shopping centre at least once a week. "It might seem hard to believe, but men want shopping to become less of a necessity and more of a pastime," says the study. "Traditionally the face of retail has been predominately designed for women, and male shoppers feel under-catered for in the retail environment. "Men tend to be more technology-focussed than women, which makes them the prime target for digital disrupters such as Amazon, so bricks and mortar retailers need to do more to connect with men emotionally. Men, when compared to women, also have a different end game in mind when shopping. Matt Jensen, the CEO and founder of clothing store M. J. Bale, says men typically shop because they have a need and not because they just want something. "They may have an event or party coming up that they want to look their best, so come in to store with a specific vision or outcome in mind (such as a wedding)," he said. "Guys shop for value, so we'll also spend time talking with the customer about how else he can use the garments to either dress up or dress down another look. Men only really come in to a store if they have a need or if something has caught their eye. "Young guys tend to make more spontaneous decisions based on something they've seen and like, whereas mature customers are more considered in terms of their purchase, weighing up factors like quality, longevity and fit," he says. "A lot of guys tend to come in to store by themselves at first, then bring in their partner afterwards for approval and validation," Jensen says.www.stuff.co.nz
The RNC Apparently Has a Dress Code for Woman Reporters [Updated] - Jezebel
CLEVELAND — Donald Trump’s noted disdain for members of the press, particularly those of us who happen to be women, has apparently inspired a dress code for woman journalists at the Republican National Convention. Jezebel has learned that at least one woman journalist covering the convention was warned by an RNC official that her slovenly, revealing attire would not be tolerated at Donald Trump’s Classiest Republican National Convention in History. Reporters are, as a rule, the most poorly dressed group of human beings on earth, with all the panache and style of college students. Which may explain why the woman journalist we spoke to was tailed Monday afternoon by a (woman) RNC media relations staffer, who stopped her to let her know that her sleeveless top and dark-wash jeans did not conform to Mr. Trump’s dress code for... It wasn’t exactly a stern lecture —“we’re being low-key,” the RNC enforcer said—but the message was clear: Come nightfall, we expect your shoulders to be covered. The dress code of course could apply to male reporters as well, though the last time sleevelessness was tolerated in men’s fashion, Donald Trump was on his first marriage. And while we can’t be totally sure, but the RNC’s concern over bare shoulders may also explain this odd email that the House Periodical Press Gallery (which credentials reporters for the RNC) sent to journalists today. All correspondents wearing a convention press pass must be engaged in the gathering and reporting of news, dress in professional attire, and adhere to journalist standards of integrity and conduct at all times. Any correspondent that does not adhere to these rules will have media credentials confiscated. We spoke to Zatkowski, who is very nice. He confirms that the email was sent out to periodical reporters, the people he oversees, because of a pervasive jeans-and-sneakers issue. that seems to have been an innovation of the specific RNC volunteer lecturing the female reporter. “This is something we always put in there,” Zatkowski said, referring to a letter on decorum and attire that the House Press Gallery sends to reporters. “But for some reason nobody read it. People are coming in jeans and sneakers, just slobbish attire. We used to have problems with Europeans wearing jeans, but they were always stylish jeans. Zatkowski says the offenders this time are mainly men: “It was mainly the guys this time for me. We’ve never had problems with level of people not looking professional. ” On Capitol Hill, he said, “They’d get kicked out for wearing that. He was a little confused to hear that RNC staffers are apparently on a mission to sleeve the women of the press corps.theslot.jezebel.com
