David Slijper Captures a Moment for Himself - Wall Street Journal
The British fashion photographer talks with The Wall Street Journal Europe about how he starts his weekend. David Slijper's portfolio is bursting with high-profile ad campaigns for brands like Jimmy Choo, L'Oréal and Burberry. His work has also graced the pages of Vogues and fashion magazines the world over, with photographs that capture a compelling inner spirit within his subjects, which have included actresses Natalie Portman and Anne Hathaway, model Claudia Schiffer... Slijper says his visual creations are influenced by the form and controlled imagery of still-life photography. His work, as evidenced by his cover for Elle magazine's October U. K. issue, featuring British model Agyness Deyn looking sultry in a leather jacket, has a understated naturalized style. Having moved to New York three years ago from North London, Mr. Slijper says he enjoys Manhattan's intensity, drawn to the fact that "you can connect with people all the time, since everything is going on right outside your door. However, it is this very intensity that makes it important for the photographer to find space to relax over the weekend. With a crazy work schedule, which goes into overdrive in September and October due to New York, London, Milan and Paris fashion weeks, Mr. Slijper says that, "it's really nice to get some peaceful time when I can. What do you do on a Friday afternoon when you finish work. It always depends where I am. If I am in Europe or in L. A., what I generally try to do is get on an airplane to try and get back to New York so I can try and have some sort of routine. On Friday nights, I usually head out to dinner or drinks. I live downtown, and downtown is always where I am going to be. There is a place in SoHo called Lure Fishbar, which has great cocktails and is swell. The best sushi I've ever had in my life is at 15 East [in Union Square]. These are the three go-to kind of places I first think of before I contemplate anywhere else. I know that even if I'm on my own, I will always bump into people I know and want to see. Who do you tend to hang out with at the weekend. I have a lot of old friends from London who have also moved to New York. If I end up doing that, I end up following them, because they know all the best places to go—all the Lower East Side kind of places. But, really, I'm not so much of a going-out kind of guy in that sense. I am never home at 6 a. m. I want to be able to wake up fresh on a Saturday morning and have some time for myself. I always start things quietly—maybe go for a wander around New York and walk along the river or to a local café like Kaffe 1668. I like to have some time to myself. I like finding time and space and peace, because before I know it, I am going to be back on an airplane again, or back in a studio with five million people, dealing with all the background noise that my life is full of. I have a little boy who's 3... We split the time exactly 50:50, so when it gets to lunchtime, he's back with me again and we normally spend Saturday afternoons hanging out together. In the summer, we'll be out playing football, or going on a boat or something like that, having a good laugh.www.wsj.com
Meredith Shuts Down More - Folio Magazine
Launched in 1997, More attracted a loyal audience of high-household income women and became profitable in the early 2000s, but suffered declines during the recession of the late 2000s from which its advertising revenues never recovered, a Meredith... "Despite a significant investment in More in 2015—including an increased trim size and higher quality paper stock that aligned with its upscale and affluent audience—More continued to face advertising challenges in the luxury marketplace," the... Since topping 1. 1 million paid and verified subscribers in 2005, More's circulation fell nearly 40 percent to just 673,000 in 2015, according to data from the Alliance for Audited Media (AAM). Newsstand sales for the 10x annual frequency title fell 25 percent over the same period, from nearly 143,000 in 2005 to 107,000 last year. But the company suggests that the more serious issue was with marketers in the luxury category—its advertising bread and butter—who have been pulling back due to financial challenges in the European market. Interestingly, a high-profile sign of More's enduring brand presence came just weeks ago, when editor-in-chief Lesley Jane Seymour was chosen to interview First Lady Michelle Obama at the AMMC conference in New York. "Meredith wishes to thank the entire More team for the creative energy and passion they have had for the magazine," the statement concludes. "They have been consummate professionals, and we appreciate everything they have done with the title over the past several years.www.foliomag.com
Drew's the Boss - MarieClaire.com
From the night my brother, Willie Kopelman, introduced us at a quiet dinner in Santa Monica, California, in 2011, we were add-water-N-stir insta-pals. Our wine-fueled cackles have taken us late into the night, and we've made breakfast for our kids with eye bags at 6 a. m. And at any time in between hours of coffee and cocktails, she is a pure joy—no prima-donna horsesh*t, no entourages, no vanity.www.marieclaire.com
