Travelling Life: Carolyn Murphy - Telegraph.co.uk
his 41-year-old model has been in the fashion spotlight since she was spotted by an agent at the age of 15. By her final year of school she was modelling couture in Paris, and by 1998 was Vogue’s Model of the Year. The mother of a 15-year-old daughter, she still features on the catwalks, in campaigns for Estée Lauder and on magazine covers from i-D to Sports Illustrated. She also works as the women’s design director for accessories brand Shinola. Her greatest travel pleasure, she says, is camping. As often as possible. I’m super-restless, so a couple of times a month I flee: a work trip, somewhere warm or upstate for a weekend. What do you need for a perfect holiday. Just the ocean and sunshine. I like luxury or roughing it, but nothing in between. An ideal holiday to me is either an adventure, with a backpack and tent, or a break at a five-star spa. What is your earliest memory of travelling. Because my father’s in the military, I travelled a lot as a child. By the age of five I’d lived in a few places, from Germany to a village in Yorkshire. A vivid early memory is of being on a big military plane, stopping in the Azores, and running about and watching waves crash on the beach. when I was young I thought I lived in an Austen or Brontë novel and was obsessed with other worlds. I’d been to all sorts of places for work in my early twenties – Jamaica, Paris, Italy, Miami, the Bahamas. But in 1997 I went to Costa Rica on a surf adventure with girlfriends, and ended up falling in love with the country (and my ex), and commuting for a few years between there and New York. Any healing beach spa that’s all-inclusive, as I’m a glutton for treatments. Have you ever been on safari. I’m about to go and can’t wait. I’d always take a canopy of trees over a perfect Parisian hotel. Capri with friends about two years ago, where I had the time of my life. Everything is right there. The food is fantastic, as are the rosé and limoncello. There are little boats, great beach clubs like La Fontelina and, because it’s so carefree and walkable, all you need to wear is a lovely dress and sandals. Other than Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur, Alila Villas Uluwatu in Bali is probably the best hotel I know. Having flown first-class to Bali, and then been taken to this paradise, with butler, pool and 24-hour service, I felt as if I’d landed in an idyllic future time-capsule. The hotel’s boat is beautiful, too, with its black sails and blond decks. I love Italian cities like Florence and Siena, where you can explore the past, but I’m also a fan of Tokyo, where I spent time when I was younger – it’s so futuristic, yet so rooted in tradition. And as in Italy, the food is amazing. In Rome a concierge recommended Tullio, which is one of my favourite traditional Italian restaurants. The tomatoes were exceptional – and I grow my own, so I’m fussy – and the truffle pasta was out of this world. Even though it was late, it was full. That’s a great thing about Italy: dinner is always slow and appreciated, and there are people laughing and dancing, and living life to the full. The Bronx Bar in Detroit. It’s not fancy – it has laminated walls from the Seventies, a jukebox and ripped-up vinyl seating.www.telegraph.co.uk

Youth psychiatric facility in Aurora seeks to expand - Chicago Tribune
The Northern Illinois Academy, a psychiatric residential treatment facility, is seeking to expand its Northeast Side location at 998 Corporate Blvd. The City Council Planning and Development Committee recently unanimously recommended the facility get a revision to its special use, as well as approval for its final plan, to expand from 64 beds to 84 beds. The academy already has approval from the Department of Children and Family Services to add the beds because it has been full for between six months to a year. As part of the expansion, the facility also would add bedrooms and classrooms. Carolyn Willandt, academy executive director, said the addition would add more people of the same kind the facility currently treats – youths age 10 to 21, from children with autism to young people with complex mental health and behavioral... "We're not planning on changing the nature of the population," she told aldermen on the Planning and Development Committee. The academy offers many programs, including weekly individual, family and group therapy, recreational therapy, social and life skill development, educational services, psychiatric services and medical services. The programs are run by Sequel Youth and Family Services, which currently operates in 17 states and serves clients from 41 states and territories, according to its website. The Northern Illinois Academy opened about 3½ years ago at the current location at Church Road and Corporate Boulevard. Dan Dolan, of Dolan and Murphy, Inc., which operates the corporate subdivision the academy is in, said the original project brought in 160 employees, and is now up to about 250. The addition would add another 60 to 70 jobs, he said. With the committee's recommendation, the whole City Council will look at the expansion request when they meet as a Committee of the Whole at 5 p. m. Tuesday in the 5th Floor Conference Room at City Hall, 44 E. Downer Place.www.chicagotribune.com
